Fabrizio Stabile, 29, from New Jersey, died on September 21 after becoming ill with Naegleria fowleri, a deadly amoeba that attacks the brain.

Health officials with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tested the wave pool at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort on Monday, October 1st, and results are expected later this week.

The amoeba can infect people when it enters the body through the nose.

According to a GoFundMe page, Stabile contracted naegleria fowleri, which the page says has only been diagnosed 143 times in the U.S.in the last 55 years. The pain was so severe that he couldn't speak coherently. It takes an average of five days for symptoms to appear exposure, with headache, fever and nausea the main symptoms. If water containing the amoeba goes up the nose, it can cause an infection that is fatal 97 percent of the time.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs around the world.

"Preliminary testing results should be ready later this week".

The BSR pool has voluntarily closed its facilities so that a small CDC team can collect samples for testing.

Doctors first thought he was suffering from meningitis, but tests revealed he had Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, when it was too late to treat the infection.

An obituary for Stabile in the Press of Atlantic City newspaper said he was an "avid outdoorsman", who had worked for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Bass Pro Shops.

The owner of BSR Cable Park, Stuart E. Parsons Jr., said the park will continue to comply with requests related to the investigation of Stabile's death. He said the surf resort, which operates an artificial man-made wave, is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".
