FEMA and the FCC are conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Wednesday, Oct. 3. "No action is needed", it'll read.

The message will be broadcast by cell towers for 30 minutes, so it's possible some people may get it later than 2:18 p.m. Right now, in cooperation with major wireless carriers, FEMA can deliver alerts nationally or to an area as small as a single county.

Aside from a few pertinent details about the alert (and the legalities supporting its existence), FEMA also released a mock-up image of what the message will look like on a smartphone.

Government officials estimated that the alert would reach upwards of 225 million United States cellphones or around 75 percent of all phones.

FEMA officials say the test will last about a half-hour, so some could receive the alert at different times.

The alert test, which is FEMA's first for the wireless emergency system - and is being coordinated with the Federal Communications Commission - will sound similar to an Amber Alert or flood watch warning. "We're constantly being bombarded by things so hopefully whatever messages are coming out of Washington won't get lost in the shuffle because, again, that's one more thing people are going to have coming at them", he said. Some cell phones will not receive the test message, and cell phones should only receive the message once.

A test of the new alert system is scheduled for this Wednesday after being postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

"This is a notification regarding the Nationwide Emergency Alert System and Wireless Alert System Test", the district wrote in a message to parents.

Though the Presidential alert system was established in 2006, this is its first nationwide test.

FEMA officials use a device that's "very similar to a laptop computer", the senior FEMA official said.

A test of broadcast systems will happen at 2:20 p.m. EDT. Cell phones should only receive the message once.

If you're looking at another piece of glowing glass - like your television - during the test, you may just see the alert there, too.

The test message, as with other WEA alerts like severe-weather warnings, will include a special tone and vibration, both repeated twice. "No action is required".
