The first lady, who has focused on advocating for children in her "Be Best" campaign, used the visit to Chipala Primary School in Lilongwe to highlight the USAID reading programme that has distributed 9.6 million books to Malawi's schools. To say her visit didn't get off to a warm start would be an understatement. The people love her, and she loves them!

"No child in this country is without a book", Malawi's Education Minister Bright Msaka told the first lady. "It is a handsome thing to see", Trump tweeted. She's focusing the trip on her interest in child welfare.

Mrs. Trump opened her first extended global tour as first lady on Tuesday in the West African nation of Ghana.

"It was very exciting".

Towards the end of her visit, children sang: "I know one day we shall meet again".

The US First Lady will then visit the US Embassy in Nairobi wrapping up the only closed-door engagements on her Kenyan visit.

The U.S. first lady received a joyous welcome in Malawi upon her arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, with singing and dancing by a troupe of women and scores of schoolchildren waving African and Malawian flags. She flew in from Ghana where she spent two days visiting a medical facility and touring a former slave castle in Cape Coast.

The first lady later left Malawi for Kenya.
