Almost 40% of Americans Eat Fast Food on Any Given Day, Report Says The United States of fast food: CDC reveals 40% of Americans eat fast food every day

That's the finding from a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New survey data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 36.6 percent of us eat some kind of fast food on any given day.

A person's income also played a key role in how often they ate fast food.

Perhaps surprisingly, the CDC found that fast food consumption grew with increasing family income.

The mainstays of take-outs - processed meat, sweetened bread, fried food and fatty sauces - are linked to chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart failure, the number one killer in the world.

"Fast food consumption has been associated with increased intake of calories, fat, and sodium".

Weinandy said while it's not realistic to tell people not to eat fast food, she would like to see healthier options. "People have the lowest health risk when they eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains", he said.

Too often, though, Americans ignore the danger.

"It is amusing, when we see news clips of a shark swimming near a beach, it scares us into not going near that beach".

'We know that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to be eating fast foods, but people really listen to their doctors, ' Weinandy said.

The new report was led by Cheryl Fryar of the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. The CDC used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to collect their results.

The report found that Americans tend to taper off fast foods as they age. The data doesn't say that those same people eat fast food every day, but each day of the year, almost 37% of American adults are consuming fast food. And among high-income families (those with incomes above 350 percent of the poverty line), 42 percent dined on fast food on a typical day.

When it came to gender, men were most likely to buy fast food for lunch, while women would purchase it as a quick and affordable snack.

The study, by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (you can read it in full here), found that nearly 40 per cent of Americans admit to eating fast food every day.

Melanie Boehmer is a registered dietitian at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

"We know for children, on days that they consume fast food, they eat about 120 more calories that day".

"These findings remind us that fast food companies have figured out a way to conveniently fit into our daily routine, despite their [products'] negative health implications", Boehmer said.

She adds that it's also up to primary care physicians to talk their patients about the dangers of eating too much fast food.
