Kavanaugh Nomination Clears Key Hurdle, Final Vote Teed Up

Brett Kavanaugh, United States President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, has defended his "emotional" testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, saying it showed his frustration at being wrongly accused of disgusting conduct completely contrary to his record and character.

"Nobody is supposed to be guilty until proven innocent in the United States of America", McConnell said on Capitol Hill on Thursday talking about Kavanaugh, while blasting Democrats.

Democrats say Republicans have tried to rush the process.

And West Virginia Democrat Sen.

A week after a televised Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at which Kavanaugh and Ford transfixed the nation, the Capitol campus remained a stew of tension as the election-season cliff-hanger neared its conclusion.

The confidential Federal Bureau of Investigation report into allegations that Brett Kavanaugh sexually abused women three decades ago "found no hint of misconduct" by the Supreme Court nominee, a top Senate Republican has said.

Confirmation would hand Trump a clear victory and tip the balance on the court to a 5-4 majority in favor of conservatives in possible legal battles ahead over contentious issues such as abortion rights, immigration, and Trump's attempt to ban transgender people from the US military.

She said she was assaulted by Mr Kavanaugh when they were both teenagers in 1982. Flake, a frequent Trump critic, was instrumental in getting the president to order the FBI investigation last Friday.

Republicans need a simple majority of 51 to invoke cloture and move forward with the final vote tomorrow.

"Against that backdrop, I testified before the Judiciary Committee last Thursday to defend my family, my good name and my lifetime of public service".

As the crucial vote neared, President Donald Trump took to Twitter with what amounted to his closing argument. It will indicate how senators, including key undecided figures, stand on the nominee after a series of sexual-misconduct allegations were made against him.

At a signal from organizers, the group began holding up signs and chanting.

Ford and Kavanaugh testified at a dramatic Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week in which she described the alleged assault, and Kavanaugh denied all of the allegations against him, while accusing the Democrats of a political "hit". That means if just two Republicans voted against Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation it would be defeated, provided the party's political opponents all voted against.

"I did not come to a decision on this until walking into the floor this morning".

After the hearings concluded in mid-September, Kavanaugh was expected to pass through the Senate, which is now controlled by Republicans at a 51-49 margin.

Looks like Susan Collins has saved Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation.

The full confirmation vote could take place as early as Saturday.

But that's misleading. The graph above considers only those who express support on a question that demands people have knowledge of Kavanaugh and how he would be likely to conduct himself on the bench. He appeared to lobby undecided senators by casting two women who confronted Sen.

A fuming Kavanaugh strode into the same packed hearing room that afternoon and said he, too, was "100 per cent" certain the incident had not occurred.

Ms Feinstein said the White House may have limited the probe. A report from the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University said ME is the top state in the nation for television ad spending related to Kavanaugh's confirmation.
