Toyota recalled more than 2 million Prius hybrids worldwide Friday over a software flaw that could in rare cases cause the cars to stall out at high speeds.

Auris, Prius and Prius+ hybrid cars with the 1.8-litre engine, built between October 2008 and November 2014, are affected.

The company is contacting all known owners of the affected cars; it's also possible to check a vehicle using the license plate or VIN via the Toyota recall database.

The company says the issue differs from problems with the Prius fail-safe mode that were addressed in the 2014 and 2015 recalls.

Toyota Ireland also said that there are no reported incidents in Ireland.

"There have been no incidence of injury or accident in Australia because of the fault", a Toyota spokesperson told 9NEWS.

He cited that despite these numbers, breast cancer belongs to the 30 percent of cancers that can be cured when detected early. For example, mammograms can find 85 percent of cancers in fatty breasts but only 68 percent of cancers in very dense breasts.

"Due to inappropriate programming in the airbag electronic control unit (ECU), a fault may be erroneously detected during vehicle startup which would disable one or more of the sensors used to detect crashes", Toyota said.

Toyota has announced a safety recall of some 807,000 Prius and Prius V cars in the US, saying that the company needs to fix a problem that could cause the vehicles to lose power and stall "in rare situations".

The auto giant last month issued a recall for 1.03 million cars globally over an issue related to wiring that could cause fires in vehicles.

When that happens, "the vehicle could lose power and stall".

Toyota said it had received three reports in Japan related to the problem by the end of September and reported them to the transport ministry.

Toyota has sold more than 10 million hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles globally, including the Prius, since 1997.
