At least 12 people were killed and 188 were wounded after a magnitude 5.9 natural disaster struck northern Haiti on Saturday night, the country's interior ministry said Sunday.

According Secretary of State for Communications Eddy Jackson Alexis, a preliminary report indicated that 11 people had died and 135 injured.

There was damage in the northern sections of the country, President Jovenel Moïse tweeted. The quake was 7.3 miles (11.7 kilometres) below the surface.

That rare procedural maneuver left Kavanaugh with the same two-vote margin he'd have had if Murkowski and Daines had both voted. On ABC's "This Week", Hirono was pressed on whether she might support potential future Democratic efforts to impeach Kavanaugh.

Images of damaged homes and partially destroyed buildings were circulating on social media, but AFP was not immediately able to confirm their authenticity.

Moise called on the population to remain calm after dozens of people left their homes in the capital.

Residents using saws or their bare hands scrambled to recover metal support rods from the debris for resale, before being chased away by authorities. Rescue operations have been underway and affected are being shifted to relief shelters.

The UN representative in Haiti, Helen La Lime, also offered help.

The devastating 7.0-magnitude quake that struck in January 2010 left more than 1.5 million people homeless. By Sunday evening the government didn't provide an estimate of the damages.

Longer-term reconstruction has been hampered by lingering political chaos in the nation of almost 11 million people, and by a deadly cholera epidemic introduced by infected Nepalese UN peacekeepers sent in after the quake.
