As Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh awaits a final Senate confirmation vote, a lawyer representing Christine Blasey Ford says she absolutely does not want him impeached if Democrats take control of Congress.

Republicans have a 51-49 majority in the Senate and this razor-thin majority has carried the vote forward, despite two swing votes.

Jon Kyl - who confirmed his support for Kavanaugh on Thursday - along with 48 other Republicans and one Democrat who have said they will vote to put Kavanaugh on the high court.

The moderate ME senator expressed her outrage at organizations that forcefully opposed Kavanaugh before even copy-and-pasting his name into their material and Democrats who announced their intention to end Kavanaugh's nomination before hearing a word of testimony.

Lawmakers might vote differently on the climactic confirmation roll call, and Collins told reporters that she wouldn't rule out doing so. Every voting Republican backed the 53-year-old conservative judge.

More than 300 protestors - including the comedian Amy Schumer and model Emily Ratajkowski - were arrested as they made desperate final appeals to senators as they arrived at the US Capitol in Washington.

Following the vote, President Trump said that he is "very proud" that the Senate has cleared the way to hold a vote on Kavanaugh. But she also said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no corroborating evidence from witnesses whose names Ford had provided.

Additionally, Ford's lawyer responded to President Donald Trump's comments at a campaign rally earlier this week where he had appeared to mock her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. If there is a 50-50 tie, Vice President Mike Pence would break it in favor of Kavanaugh.

Flake, like Collins, believed that the FBI investigation, which did not corroborate the sexual assault allegations, was thorough. Those allegations magnified the clash from a routine Supreme Court struggle over judicial ideology into an angrier, more complex jumble of questions about victims' rights, the presumption of innocence and personal attacks on nominees.

Rice later clarified her initial tweet, saying that she was not making a formal announcement, but expressing "deep disappointment" in Collins. Kavanaugh has denied all the charges. That was the day's first GOP victory in the spellbinding battle that's been fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and stalwart conservative support for Trump.

"Millions of Americans, millions of women are watching us today", said New York Sen.

On the other side, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat".

Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually and physically assaulting her more than 30 years ago while they were both at a party during their high school years.

Kavanaugh's nomination process in the last two weeks had dramatic turn of events, as at least three women came out in public accusing him of sexual assault.

"The facts presented do not mean that Professor Ford was not sexually assaulted that night or at some other time but they do lead me to conclude that the allegations failed to meet the more likely than not standard", she said.
