Brett Kavanaugh confirmed to US Supreme Court

BREAKING: Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court | Trending Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed To Supreme Court By 50-48 Vote

It has been speculated that the court will vote in favour of Brett Kavanaugh which will take place Saturday at 3.30pm local time. Bush spoke to the senators because they would not be as receptive to hearing from Trump.

The committee paused the nomination process for a week so the FBI could investigate.

Protestors in the gallery rose one by one, many of them wearing black, and began shouting.

The announcements Friday by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia came after weeks of shocking accusations, hardball politics and Capitol protests.

Kavanaugh, in an opinion piece published this week in The Wall Street Journal, said he views his role as a judge as that of "an umpire - a neutral and impartial arbiter who favors no political party, litigant or policy".

Experts worry that numerous most qualified candidates for high office - and especially the Supreme Court - will not answer the call to serve since it means lasting trauma for their families and reputations.

Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, the only Republican to oppose the nominee, voted "present", offsetting the absence of Kavanaugh supporter Steve Daines of Montana, who was attending his daughter's wedding. "In other words, people thinking of the court as not politically divided in the same way, as not an extension of politics, but instead somehow above the fray", she said. Some disrupted the vote in the Senate chambers.

"I am not a pro-plaintiff or pro-defendant judge", he said, in a highly unusual plea to defend his impartiality.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin, and announcements of support Friday from Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME, along with Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, locked in the needed votes.

"Judge Kavanaugh is a mainstream jurist with a clear record of applying the law as written, consistent with the Constitution".

The Senate is expected to vote soon to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

The vote gave Mr Trump his second appointee to the court, and comes in the amidst of campaigning for next month's mid-term elections.

His confirmation has severe ramifications for the American judicial system, and represents one of the biggest political victories of Donald Trump's presidency to date.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, himself a former presidential candidate, said about Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation: "America may have gained a new member of the Supreme Court, but a part of our nation's soul was lost during this toxic process". "I don't believe Judge Kavanaugh's temperament is consistent with someone who has the honor to serve on the Supreme Court".

The addition of Kavanaugh stands to reshape drastically the jurisprudence of many, if not all, of those issues.

The Senate voted 50-48 to approve Kavanaugh as more than 1,000 protesters rallied in Washington against a nominee who has been plagued by allegations of sexual misconduct as a young man and had questions raised over his candor and partisan rhetoric. Citing the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee and "the virtual mob that assaulted us in the course of this process", McConnell said "they've managed to deliver the only thing that we had not been able to figure out how to do, which was to get our folks fired up".

Democrats expressed concern not only about the sexual assault allegations, but also his judicial record, arguing that he would overturn Roe v Wade and rule from the extreme right.

After months of contentious battles on Capitol Hill, which included numerous last-minute and unsubstantiated allegations of sexual misconduct, the USA senate approved Kavnauagh's nomination in a narrow vote Saturday that fell down party lines.
