Google plans to shut down its social network and announce new privacy measures in response to the incident, the paper said.

Google also said the consumer version of Google+ had low usage and engagement and 90% of user sessions are less than five seconds long, essentially trashing its own product to cover up.

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous individuals, reports that Google deliberately avoided disclosing the problem at the time, in part to avoid drawing regulatory scrutiny.

Google refused to send Pichai to a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on September 5, where Facebook's chief operating officer and Twitter Inc's chief executive testified.

According to a statement today by Google engineering veep Ben Smith, the coding cockup was found in an API review dubbed Project Strobe. The bug was reported to have potentially allowed app developers to access profile data from even private accounts.

It further added, "Every year, we send millions of notifications to users about privacy and security bugs and issues".

As a bit of a bright side, however, there was no evidence that any developer was even aware this bug existed, despite 438 applications using the API. That means instead of just allowing access to your account with one simple "Allow" button, you'll get to choose which permissions apps are allowed access to each particular service. Sorry, there's no way to tell. Nowadays, you head over to Google+ and it is truly a ghost town, that has been taken over by spammers.

Google can not confirm which users were specifically impacted by this bug.

According to Smith, the vulnerability didn't rise to the level of requiring a notification.

Information that could be accessed did not include posts, messages or telephone numbers, a spokesperson said.

For Gmail apps requesting permission to user data Google will only grant access to apps which 'directly enhancing email functionality-such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services)'.

This shut down will come after a 10-month "wind-down" period, which ends next August.

Google+ was launched in June, 2011 as a way to compete with other social networks such as Facebook. Enterprise customers can set common access rules, and use central controls, for their entire organization. The platform does indeed enjoy mild traction with business and enterprise users looking to facilitate communication for their teams, and Google+ will stay around to fulfill that role in some capacity.

USA lawmakers are concerned that the big tech companies have come under scrutiny for a variety of reasons in recent years.

Google says all app developers will have to re-submit their app for a review by February 15, 2019.
