South African finance minister criticized after testimony

Should Nene go? Here's what SA's political heavyweights have to say Views from UDM leader Bantu South African finance minister criticized after testimony

The decision, made by President Cyril Ramaphosa, comes after Nene chose to resign from the post on Tuesday morning following a public outcry sparked by his public apology last week over his multiple meetings with the Gupta family at their private home.

Meanwhile, Malema - in a written letter to Ramaphosa on Monday - said SA was undergoing serious economic difficulties, and one of the ingredients in an economic recovery was a credible finance minister.

South Africa's finance minister has resigned after acknowledging missteps during the scandal-tainted tenure of former president Jacob Zuma while testifying in a corruption inquiry.

"I was wrong in meeting the Guptas at their residence", he said.

Zuma and the Guptas, who face numerous allegations of using their friendship for mutual self-enrichment, have consistently denied any wrongdoing.

"Mr Nene served the people and government of South Africa with diligence and ability", Ramaphosa told reporters in Cape Town.

At the graft inquiry, Nene accused Zuma of pushing policies created to benefit the Guptas, including a massive nuclear power expansion programme.

"The Nene case shows how it is hard for Ramaphosa to change the country", Tresca said.

Lunch: Pakistan off to a great start against Australia on day one
The Test series will be followed by a three-match T20I series (Abu Dhabi, October 24, and Dubai , October 26 and October 28). Australia negotiated the 13 overs and were 30/0 at stumps with Usman Khawaja not out on 17 and Aaron Finch batting on 13.

"It's a measure of his character and commitment to the country that he has chose to resign in spite not being implicated in any wrongdoing", the president said.

The biggest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, issued a similar call, saying Nene is likely to be the subject of lengthy investigations and that he risks "compromising public confidence" in the National Treasury.

Nene said he believed he was sacked because he refused to "toe the line" on projects, including a since-abandoned deal for nuclear energy, that may have benefited the Gupta family and other Zuma associates.

The communist party praised Nene for refusing to hand South Africa over to what it called the highest bidder, by refusing to sign the nuclear contract, which former president Jacob Zuma wanted to enter into with Russian Federation.

On the state capture inquiry, Ramaphosa said: "No person should be above scrutiny and no person should be above the law". Jonas, Mboweni and Kganyago didn't answer calls to their mobile phones.

The country's main opposition party, however, said it was anxious about some of Mboweni's social media posts during his period away from politics and described them as "a little looney" and "at odds with government policy".

Weekend reports indicated that Nene's future as finance minister was on shaky ground following his admission to the meetings, with some claiming Gauteng finance MEC Barbara Creecy could be his replacement.
