Trump decries calls to impeach Kavanaugh as an ‘insult to American public’ Trump calls Kavanaugh sexual assault claims a hoax

While Trump apologized on behalf of the nation for "the awful pain and suffering" Kavanaugh and his family had experienced and declared him "proven innocent", the new justice assured Americans that he would be fair and was taking the job with "no bitterness".

Trump lauded Kavanaugh as a "brilliant jurist" and blamed Democrats for the focus on decades-old allegations of sexual misconduct that dominated debate in the weeks before the nominee's Senate confirmation on Saturday. The FBI probe into the allegations against Kavanaugh reportedly found no corroboration of the allegations against him but was criticized by Democrats for not being a full investigation.

Kavanaugh promised to be an "impartial" judge and a "team player" during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House late Monday.

Trump used his introduction of Kavanaugh to slam the judge's opponents.

President Trump said he was apologizing on behalf of the whole country at a ceremonial White House swearing-in after the Senate confirmed the nomination on Saturday despite sexual assault allegations against Mr Kavanaugh.

He said that "under historic scrutiny", Mr Kavanaugh was "proven innocent".

Kavanaugh's predecessor, Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired in June, was a more moderate conservative and sometimes sided with the court's four liberal justices.

Any technical arguments are likely to be overshadowed by Kavanaugh's first public appearance wearing the traditional black robe donned by Supreme Court justices.

His first day on the bench is Tuesday when he and his colleagues will hear arguments about longer jail terms for repeat offenders.

A petition to impeach Justice Kavanaugh has more than 150,000 signatures.

The scene Tuesday morning contrasted sharply with a loud demonstration on Saturday, when chanting protesters climbed the normally off-limits Supreme Court steps and plaza.

Kavanaugh, whose bid to join the top United States court almost failed after a California professor accused him of assaulting her when they were in high school, said he would enter his new job without bitterness despite a political fight that he told lawmakers had destroyed his family and his name. There will also be those looking for any lingering signs of Kavanaugh's heated, partisan confirmation fight.

Some analysts said the court's reputation could suffer as it becomes perceived as a political, rather than a legal, institution.

Trump said he once told Kavanaugh that his confirmation would be a "piece of cake".

In reality, Kavanaugh´s confirmation lit a match under existing tensions ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump's first Supreme Court appointee, Neil Gorsuch, also took part in a White House oath ceremony.

"We wish you a long and happy career in our common calling", Roberts said. But when asked again Sunday about it, he said different rules might apply if the same party controls the Senate and White House.
