BHUBANESWAR, India: A cyclone slammed into India's eastern seaboard on Thursday, killing at least five people, destroying huts, uprooting trees, snapping telephone poles and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity.

Titli' is moving north westward over coastal Odisha causing heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts different parts of the State.

Heavy rainfall continues to lash the districts, as the weather department warned that Cyclone Titli was very likely to maintain the intensity of a cyclone till Thursday evening with wind speed up to 90 kmph.

Road communication between Paralakhemundi and Mohana and some other block headquarters in Gajapati had been disrupted under the impact of the cyclone, he said.

The storm has moved northwards with a speed of 14kmph and is centred about 320km south-southeast of Gopalpur coast in Odisha and 270km southeast of Kalingapatnam coasts in Andhra Pradesh at present.

More than 3 lakh people have been evacuated in the region.

Horticulture crops suffered extensive damage in Srikakulam district while paddy suffered damage in Vizianagaram.

During its north westward movement it will weaken gradually and re-curve north eastward towards Gangetic West Bengal.

Cyclone Titli is expected to make landfall at the Odisha coast at around 5:30 am tomorrow. While four NDRF teams have been deployed in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam, Srikakulum and Vijaynagram.

Special teams comprising officials from the R&B, SDMA, and state electricity board are monitoring the situation along national highways, to ensure quick restoration.

East Coast Railway has already announced cancellation of some trains, diversion and short-termination of trains between Vizianagaram and Khurda Road (in Odisha).

Also, operations at Paradip port have been suspended and all ships have been shifted to deep sea.

Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday, the IMD said.

The IMD advised total suspension of fishing operations and shifting of coastal hutment dwellers to safe places.
