"I strongly believe we're going to get the right answer to what caused the hole on the International Space Station and that together we'll be able to continue our strong collaboration", Bridenstine said, as reported by the Associated Press.

Roscosmos, which oversees the Russian space program, tweeted a photo of Hague and Ovchinin being examined in Zhezkazgan. But the incident highlights recent tensions that have surfaced in a long-running collaboration in space between the United States and Russian Federation.

The two astronauts were to arrive at the International Space Station (ISS) six hours after the launch to join an American, a Russian and a German now aboard the station. "The crew's safety systems worked".

April 28, 2015: A Progress ship reached low Earth orbit, but it was spinning and could not be controlled. The leak was quickly repaired, but Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin suggested that the leak was caused by something other than an accident or production defect.

US astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin landed safely and rescue crews who raced to locate them on the Kazakh steppe quickly linked up with them, according to the USA space agency NASA and Russia's space agency Roscosmos.

The last time the Russian space program had a manned launch failure was in 1983.

The former military pilots were meant to join Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Roscosmos's Sergey Prokopyev on the ISS after a six-hour flight.

Donald Trump: US 'very tough' in bid to find missing Jamal Khashoggi
Local media on Tuesday reported on the possibility that Khashoggi was kidnapped and taken aboard one of the private planes. They say that video cameras at the consulate were not recording at the time .

"There was an issue with the booster from today's launch", NASA said in a statement on its website. Today it has been shown again how great the Soyuz is: despite a misstart, the crew was safely brought back to Earth.

The astronauts, a Russian and an American, were reported safe, but the failed launch Thursday throws off the schedule for sending crew to the International Space Station.

The ballistic descent is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal, NASA said.

The capsule took 34 minutes to reach the ground after it separated from the faulty rocket, NASA said. The crew landed about 20 kilometers east of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, where rescue crews were scrambled to find them. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesman, put it more bluntly in his daily conference call with journalists: "Thank God everyone is alive".

It can hold a crew of up to six people and at present has three people aboard, two men - a German and a Russian - as well as one female US astronaut. The first crewed flights would not take place until several months after that, unless the space agency is willing to take additional risks with those missions. That trio arrived in June.

Their arms and legs flail while being shaken around at he moment the failure occurred.

He added: "Spaceflight is hard!" It read: "NASA is working closely with Roscosmos to ensure the safe return of the crew".
