Defending Shanghai champion Roger Federer had his hands full with Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday.

Earlier, 10th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (8) - the second straight year that the Greek player has defeated Khachanov in the second round in Shanghai.

However, the 14-time grand slam champion only needed two, clinching the match when Chardy sent a forehand long.

But the Spaniard earned a piece of personal history after that, winning the second set - the first time he had taken a set against the Swiss maestro.

The Russian then broke Zhang in the ninth game and eventually went on to serve out the match.

A thrilling deciding set unfolded with each man saving a break point until, at 4-4 30-30, Medvedev produced two terrible forehands to present his opponent with an opening.

The former world number one and 37-year-old Swiss superstar advanced but Medvedev produced the highlight of the night in the second set.

Del Potro, the third seed, said he is suffering from a virus and reviewing his health "hour by hour", after laboring past France's Richard Gasquet.

The Argentine continues to be under the weather, but just about did enough to see off Gasquet 7-5, 7-6 (9/7). "I know that this is where I could be playing a lot of tennis, depending on how I play".

Sancho's England debut impresses Kane and Dier
The England captain has scored seven goals in just nine appearances against the Hammers in his career. Also Ross Barkley , who had a good impact on the game as well.

"I was telling myself, particularly tonight I can not do this (lose) because they were there, but I don't know how much I draw from that, quite honestly".

"It wasn't easy to play for me today", said del Potro, who reached the China Open final last week.

"I got lucky that I win, but tomorrow will be a different day".

"After the surgery I was not managing to play my best, and that has changed".

Second seed Djokovic enjoyed a measure of revenge as he booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-0 demolition of Marco Cecchinato.

Rising star Zverev was similarly emphatic as he brushed aside Australian teenager Alex de Minaur, 6-1, 6-4.

Number two seed Djokovic nailed his place in the last 16 on Tuesday with a convincing victory over Jeremy Chardy. "I've always played him when he's playing well, but I'll hope I can take it to him".
