Google workers stage global walkouts over sex misconduct

Google,MeToo,Sundar Pichai Alphabet declined to share any details about DeVaul’s departure from the company on Tuesday

Google employees, who walked off the job to protest the internet company's lenient treatment of executives accused of sexual misconduct, leave after attending a protest rally on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, in NY.

The protest, which organiser Claire Stapleton told journalist Katie Couric was a "grassroots, groundswell movement", took place after staff dismay at a New York Times report which detailed allegations of sexual misconduct levelled at senior executives and apparent protection from Google.

Employees and contractors from more than 40 Google offices including London, Dublin and NY left their desks at an 11.10am local time for each location.

DeVaul's departure comes as Google grapples with reports that it gave some executives multimillion dollar payouts despite allegations of sexual harassment against them.

Mr Rubin, known as the "creator" of the Android mobile operating system, denied the allegation in the story, which he also said contained "wild exaggerations" about his compensation.

According to the official statement attributed to Pichai: "Yesterday, we let Googlers know that we are aware of the activities planned for Thursday and that employees will have the support they need if they wish to participate".

Google employees gather in a common area to attend the Google Walkout in Singapore, November 1, 2018.

The huge payouts have been raising questions over whether Google has been taking workplace sexual harassment seriously.

Pichai said he has heard from many employees on the subject of inappropriate behaviour at work and was "deeply sorry for the past actions and the pain they have caused employees".

Google last week tried explaining its stand amidst the growing backlash over its handling of sexual misconduct cases at the workplace but it seems that its efforts have backfired.

Members of Google's staff in over 20 offices around the world are walking out today to protest the company's treatment of women.

The email didn't mention the reported incidents involving Rubin, DeVaul or anyone else at Google, but Pichai didn't dispute anything in the Times story.

On the Twitter account for @GoogleWalkout, there's a list of demands from employees, including putting an end to private arbitration in instances of sexual harassment and assault.

"I am deeply sorry for the past actions and the pain they have caused employees", Pichai wrote.

Pichai and Vice President Eileen Naughton said the company fired 48 people for sexual harassment in the past two years without giving severance packages.
