Americans head to the polls on Tuesday for midterm elections with President Donald Trump's Republican party seeking to retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Buoyed by a substantial lead in national opinion polls, Democrats hope for sweeping gains.

Democrats led with likely African-American voters (84pc to 8pc), Latinos (57pc to 29pc), voters between the ages of 18-34 (57pc to 34pc), women (55pc to 37pc) and independents (35pc to 23pc).

Mr. Trump's aides say the president will be campaigning right to the end, planning a series of get-out-the-vote interviews with local media at the White House Tuesday before settling in to watch the returns. If Trump manages to pull off a victory in terms of retaining control of one or both Houses, it will be seen as a validation of his stand that poor migrants and refugees from other countries are a threat to the peaceful life of the American people and send out a clear message to the world on what the original "country of migrants" now thinks on that issue.

In the battle for the Senate, Democrats are defending seats in 10 states that Trump won in the 2016 presidential election, including a handful that he won by double digits. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans (64%) say immigration is extremely important to them, while that dips twenty points to 44% among Democrats.

With just a day to go for the polls, the caravan and the economy seem to have become the biggest issues for the nation, though there is some concern on healthcare for all, which the Democrats have been pushing as their main agenda. "And [voters are] going to say Republicans have offered a record of results and Democrats are offering resistance and going back".

That, I'm afraid, is how millions of Democrats would evaluate the outcome of the midterms if the Republicans hold both houses of Congress while losing the aggregate vote by multiple percentage points.

Both sides are revved up ahead of Election Day, with 85 percent of Democrats expressing a high level of interest in the elections compared to 82 percent of Republicans.

While he is not on the ballot, Mr Trump has acknowledged that the 2018 mid-term elections represent a referendum on his presidency.

It did not take long for the video to go viral, with many praising the former U.S. president Barack Obama.

Without invoking his name, Mr Obama has accused Mr Trump of lying and "fear-mongering" and warned Democrats not to be distracted.

Mr Trump said: "Rumour has it that Senator Joe Donnelly of IN is paying for Facebook ads for his so-called opponent on the Libertarian ticket". Heidi Heitkamp is far behind Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer in North Dakota.

"I think when women are by themselves in a voting booth on Tuesday, they're going to vote for Republicans".

With two days left before polls close, President Donald Trump is traveling to two traditionally Republican states as he looks to help put GOP candidates over the top. "I think it's very telling that Barack Obama is out there on the campaign trail". Bob Corker, a Republican.

Trump's approval rating in the poll stands at 39% overall, with 55% disapproving, slightly worse than in early October, when 41% approved of his performance and 52% disapproved.

"These rallies are the best thing we've done", Mr. Trump told reporters Sunday, predicting the GOP would do well in the House and "really well" in the Senate.
