A Colorado man accused of killing his pregnant wife and two daughters pleaded guilty to all charges on Tuesday in a deal that will allow him to avoid the death penalty. Watts has claimed Shanann had killed one daughter and was actively trying to kill the other when he attacked her in an act of passion, CBS Denver reported.

In the immediate aftermath of his August 15 arrest, Watts struggled with depression in jail and was "despondent", a source told People magazine at the time.

"I just want them back", he said in the interview. Shanann Watts' body was later discovered on the property of an oil and natural gas company that Christopher Watts had worked for. Autopsy results have not been released.

Christopher Watts entered his plea Tuesday during a court hearing in Greeley, replying "guilty" nine times in response to Judge Marcelo Kopcow's reading of each charge against him in the deaths of Shanann Watts, 34, and their children, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.

Authorities aren't entirely sure why the husband and father killed his wife and their daughters.

"That, to me, was the most important consideration in deciding how to proceed with this case", Mr Rourke said.

Chris Watts and his attorneys have reached a plea deal in the highly-watched murder case out of Frederick.

Rourke said at a press conference that the plea deal was made with the support of Shanann Watts' family, and after he explained what he called the "extraordinary delays that now exist" in Colorado in putting prisoners to death.

"(Her mother) said, 'He made the choice to take those lives, '" the district attorney said.

'I do not want to be in the position of choosing to take his'.

Rourke said Tuesday that investigators never believed that Watts was being entirely truthful. Rourke said that when the Rzuceks asked about the state of the death penalty in Colorado, he explained the potential difficulties and likely delays that would accompany that route.

He said there were no winners in reaching a plea deal.

"What I can tell you most affirmatively today by what happened in the courtroom, is the spotlight that he tried to shine on Shanann, falsely, incorrectly and frankly a flat-out lie, has been corrected", said Weld County District Attorney Michael J. Rourke.

"I know that that will never be fully realized because, obviously, the tragedy that sits before us today is the loss of four handsome lives".

Rourke said they may decide to testify when Christopher Watts is formally sentenced on November 19. "The spotlight shines directly where it belongs - on him", Rourke said.
