Most Britons back staying in EU

Theresa May’s ‘secret Brexit deal’ with EU Channel 4 Poll: Britons Would Back 'Remain' in New Brexit Vote
Guillermo Lane | 08 November, 2018, 01:33

Around 26 per cent of respondents said they would accept the deal, with 33 per cent rejecting the deal.

"We have not heard the Brexit argument made for the last 18 months, and we're still on 46 percent".

The statement comes as a report in one of Britain's leading newspapers, the Sunday Times, suggests May has drawn up a secret Brexit plan with EU.

"I would also say, some of the people I know voted remain are now so bored and frustrated with this process they to would back a Brexit".

The EU has suggested that the tweaked "two-tier" backstop covering all of the United Kingdom could give mainland Britain some scope to set its own trade rules while keeping Northern Ireland aligned with the EU.

Dominic Raab, the UK's Brexit Secretary, privately demanded the right of the United Kingdom to quit the EU's Irish backstop after just three months.

Justice Secretary David Gauke warned that a no-deal Brexit would be bad for the UK.

However, the newspaper also reported that the new deal will include an "exit clause" created to convince those who support Brexit that remaining in the customs union is only temporary.

"Brexit has undermined the Good Friday Agreement" - the 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of violence in Northern Ireland - "and it is fraying relationships between Britain and Ireland", Varadkar said.

And the survey results will not help her.

The article quotes a senior Whitehall source as saying: "The PM will be able to say there's no more backstop, we've got rid of that - success".

Junior minister Damien English dismissed the suggestion that Ireland was "going to be shafted", insisting it was "not true".

"The Taoiseach indicated an openness to consider proposals for a review, provided that it was clear that the outcome of any such review could not involve a unilateral decision to end the backstop", a spokesperson for the Irish government said.

He said there was a "rapidly ticking clock" but that minds were now being focused with a view to concluding a deal and he welcomed that. The backstop is created to ensure there is no return to a hard-border in Ireland and has proved to be a sticking point in negotiations.

Britain is confident that it will "imminently" reach a deal with the European Union on its post-Brexit financial services trade with the bloc, British financial services minister John Glen said Monday. "I certainly hope we are".

There is the prospect of a special European Union summit later this month if a deal on the backstop can be reached later this week.
