Multiple people were reportedly injured after at least one gunman opened fire at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday.

An unnamed witness told the newspaper that someone ran into the bar around 11.30pm (local time) and started shooting what looked to be a black pistol.

"The gunman used an automatic weapon and also threw in some sort of smoke bombs in to the crowd in the club", he said. "These poeple have never hurt anyone in their lives, they are just kids", he said.

A trail of blood was visible on the street at the entrance of the venue.

At least four ambulances responded to treat multiple victims, the Ventura County Star reports.

Police have described it as a "mass casualty incident" and helicopters are swirling overhead.

"Please stay away from area", the department urged in a tweet.

The suspect was initially reported to be inside the bar.

Video showed causalities being carried out of the bar by members of the public and emergency workers.

The extent of the victim's injuries has not yet been released.

Social media reports claim the suspect shot the bouncer before throwing a smoke grenade and firing more shots.

Witnesses said they had spoken to friends who escaped the shooting, which took place during a popular student night at the bar.
