Women smashed records this election cycle in terms of the number who filed to run, the number of women who became their party's nominees for House, Senate and gubernatorial races, and even the number of women running against women in general election races.

Before Tuesday, there were 107 women in Congress, and that figure has been passed.

The first Native American women have also been elected to Congress, with Democrats Deb Haaland winning in New Mexico and Sharice Davids in Kansas.

At a state level, Democrat Janet Mills of ME and Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota were elected as their state's first-ever female governors, and another 3,379 women were their parties' nominees for legislative seats. Jahana Hayes became the first black woman from CT to be elected to congress.

"Words can not express my gratitude to every organizer, every small-dollar donor, every working parent and dreamer who helped make this movement happen", Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said to the ecstatic crowd that packed the election night party celebrating her victorious run for Congress.

Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar are the first Muslim women elected to Congress. A record number will serve in the new Congress. Women were 21 points more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans in House races - 60 percent voted for Democrats, to 38 percent who voted for Republicans.

The Associated Press reported that 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates in 2018, spurred in many cases by the #MeToo movement and a renewed interest in politics following the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, whose attitudes toward women have been questioned.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, shocked many in NY when she defeated ten-term Rep. Joe Crowley in the state's Democratic congressional primary earlier this year.

Lauren Underwood, elected to represent Illinois' 14th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, makes history as the first woman and first African-American elected to represent the district. Iowa has sent women to the Senate and governor's mansions, but never to the House of Representatives. The first ever openly LGBT governor, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a bisexual woman, won her re-election bid Tuesday as well.

There was also an historic gender gap that showed women more supportive of Democrats than Republicans. Also in the Senate, Republican Marsha Blackburn will become Tennessee's first woman senator. In the early exit polls, nonwhites accounted for 29 percent of voters nationally, surpassing the previous record of 25 percent in 2014, which includes 12 percent blacks and 12 percent Hispanics.
