President Donald Trump, emboldened by Republican election wins in the Senate and scornful of GOP candidates he felt didn't sufficiently embrace his support, delivered a stark warning to the new Democratic House majority on Wednesday: Investigate me, and I'll investigate you - and the government will grind to a halt.

"Keeping the Senate will allow the Republicans to maintain control over nominations".

Soon after the press conference, Trump also dropped a bombshell by announcing that he had sacked attorney general Jeff Sessions, a move that many deem as an effort to curtail the Russian meddling probe that targets his 2016 presidential campaign.

Sanders, who like so many other rumored 2020 contenders traveled extensively ahead of the midterms with a handful of stops in states that figure to play a decisive role in the primaries, called the Democratic midterm victories "a rejection of not only a reactionary president, who has tried to throw millions of people off health care and give tax breaks to billionaires, but also a rejection of his racism and sexism and homophobia and xenophobia".

In so doing, he took advantage of a constitutional quirk-only a third of Senate seats are up for grabs in any one election, and most of this year's key contests were in states Trump won in 2016-and sought to deemphasize the only truly national competition this fall: the fight for control of the House.

Rep. Mike Coffman in Colorado blames his loss on resentment toward Trump in his Denver-area district.

"Ohio is fundamentally, in off presidential years, a red state", said Mike Dawson, who runs a website devoted to tracking OH election results.

Pelosi, who also said she is "100%" sure that she will regain her Speakership, told CNN's Chris Cuomo that "now we can talk about how we can come together and put together bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform".

"We actually have a great relationship", Trump said of Pelosi.

When asked at exit polls, 23 percent of voters said immigration was the most important issue to them.

"The answer is yes", Mr Trump said after hearing the response.

In regard to the case of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Trump said: "I'll have a much stronger opinion on that subject over the next week".

The suburbs are how Democrats were able to take back the House, but they ultimately still fell short in targeted House seats in North Carolina - another state Trump was able to win after it had gone for Obama in 2008 - and OH, which Trump won solidly after Obama carried it twice.

That nearly certainly wouldn't be the end of this story, but it's the beginning of a new , fraught chapter. The nationwide protest is being organized by a coalition of hundreds of public interest organizations.

The bipartisan unity is less secure when it comes to trade talks with allies, however, and the new Democrat majority could make it more hard to win congressional approval for a revamp of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.

Trump began began drawing lines against Democratic inquiries into his administration early in the day with a Twitter posting.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".

"They can play that game", he said.

"Or we can work together", he said, adding that "it really could be a lovely bipartisan type of situation".

Democrats took control of the House for the first time since 2010, shifting the balance of power in Washington where Republicans had dominated both chambers. In the Republican Party, alas, it was mostly the moderates who were defeated - another artifact of Trump's rise.

Nearly all of the House Democratic gains came from the suburbs: They are projected to flip over two dozen seats in primarily suburban districts, sweeping out once-comfortable Republican incumbents including Reps.

"The American people deserve real action to end the daily epidemic of gun violence that is stealing the lives of our children on campuses, in places of worship and on our streets, " said Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democratic leader who is running for a second stint as House speaker.

And against a President who leaves Americans in no doubt as to where he stands, a clear direction from Democrats might be needed more than ever.

Was 2018 a referendum on President Trump?

The election was historic for different reasons.

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are the first Muslim women and Sharice Davids and Debra Haaland the first Native American women to be elected to Congress. He said that Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, "gave me no love, and she lost". At the Hilton DoubleTree Resort, music blared from the hall and smiles were etched on faces. "That's a firewall", GOP volunteer James Murr said. "The electoral setup strongly favoured the Republicans in the Senate, where they were defending only 9 seats vs 25 for the Democrats (counting the two independents with the Democrats)".

A Republican governorship majority coupled with GOP victories in gubernatorial races in battleground states may also boost Trump in 2020, since governors hold veto power over redistricting measures. They're pitching her as the only person with the experience necessary to guide the House in what is already shaping up to be a tumultuous time.
