It was unclear to whom Trump was referring, but Republican Gov. Rick Scott, the Republican candidate for Senate, has called the female election supervisors in Broward and Palm Beach counties "unethical liberals".

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, who is also the mayor of Tallahassee, had conceded defeat to his Republican opponent Ron DeSantis late Tuesday night.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., exits the Senate subway en route to a vote on Capitol Hill, June 20, 2018.

With all precincts reporting early Wednesday, Scott held a lead of 38,717 votes out of more than 8 million cast - a margin of less than one half of 1 percent.

Apparently the race to claim a U.S. Senate seat isn't over in Florida.

And like 2000, the counting process is becoming contentious.

Nelson's campaign says the next step in the process is for officials in the 67 counties to recheck their vote counts, and for the Nelson campaign to contact voters whose ballots were not counted due to a lack of ID or a matching address.

The canvassing boards, which typically consist of the supervisor of elections, a county judge and a county commission member, review the ballots to see if the signature matches the one on file when the voter first registered, and to determine if the voter didn't already vote.

Nelson's campaign released a statement saying Scott's action appears to be politically motivated and borne of desperation.

Scott's approval rating as governor has gone up a lot in the previous year as he's not only managed crises (i.e., hurricanes) but kept a smart level of distance from Trump (i.e. getting close enough but still maintaining an individual reputation).

As of Wednesday morning, Governor Scott had won a 50.21 percent share of the results equating to 4,074,467 votes.

Those recounts were halted by the US Supreme Court, and George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by 537 votes in Florida to win the presidency. She was researching the subject Thursday.

In elections with a winning margin of 0.25 percentage points or fewer, the state requires a hand recount of ballots where machines didn't detect a vote.

What happened in the House and the governor races?

There are about 17,000 votes right now in the Senate race.

The percentage difference of 0.42 percentage points falls within a margin allowing a recount of ballots.

Election history shows, though, that margins are going to have to become nearly wafer-thin for a trailing candidate to have any hope of overtaking a leader in the recount process.

"Since that time, it has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported", the statement said.

DeSantis declined to discuss prospects for a recount, telling reporters he's "very proud to be elected".

"It's a great honor", he said.

"We're working hard on the transition", DeSantis said. "But, we're good and look forward to serving". "And then the State will conduct an orderly recount". The error rate on these systems approaches zero, and recounts will likely only change the numbers in the low three-digit range in any direction.

"This is not like it was in 2000. There's not a lot of room for strategy", Richard said. Nelson's campaign aides believe he will emerge victorious once all the ballots are counted. She said Democrats set up phone banks and began calling those voters, urging them to go to county offices to present their identification information so that their ballots will count.

Nelson lawyer Marc Elias said Scott was using his official position to try to influence the election. "Nelson will be declared the victor and will be returned to the Senate", Mr. Elias said.

In a statement from Nelson's office, the longtime incumbent said Scott had prematurely declared victory in the race, which CNN has not yet called.

Florida's governor's race on Thursday joined contests for U.S. Senate and state agricultural commissioner headed toward recounts as continued vote-counting in Democratic strongholds threatened apparent Republican winners.

Nelson filed his own federal lawsuit Friday, seeking to postpone the Saturday deadline to submit unofficial election results.
