The frigate was on its way home to the Haakonsvern base of the Royal Norwegian Navy on the western coast after taking part in NATO's Trident Juncture 2018 military exercise, which took place from October 25 to November 7 in Norway.

The Norwegian coast guard said the collision involving the KNM Helge Ingstad frigate and the 113,000-dwt Sola TS (built 2017) happened in Hjeltefjorden, north of the Sture terminal.

The footage, which was posted on Twitter, shows the warship resting on its side in shallow water near the coastline where the vessel was beached to avoid sinking.

In connection with the collision between the frigate KNM Helge Ingstad and the tanker Sola TS at the Sture terminal in Øygarden Equinor will gradually shut down operations at Sture. Eight crew from the frigate were injured.

A Norwegian warship was repeatedly warned of its collision course with a Maltese oil tanker before then hitting it in a fjord, the BBC has been told.

The Navy quickly evacuated all the crew except for 10 essential staff members to prevent a possible fuel leak.

The frigate, which recently took part in a major North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military exercise, was aground and tilting on one side, live television pictures showed.

The Equinor Sture oil shipment terminal, from which the oil tanker left fully loaded, was closed as a precautionary measure but reopened Thursday.

The KNM Helge Ingstad has been listing dangerously since Thursday's collision in the Hjeltefjord near Bergen.
