US mid-terms 2018: Florida senate race recount triggered
10 November, 2018, 06:33
Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz called Snipes "either incompetent or corrupt" and accused her of "spinning ballots out of nothing" in the Senate seat between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson.
Nelson and the Florida Democratic Party are suing to prevent elections officials statewide from throwing out mail-in votes and provisional ballots.
Florida counties have until noon Saturday to submit unofficial election results to the Department of State.
"Senator Nelson hired one of Hillary Clinton's lawyers from D.C., and the first thing he did was tell reporters that he is here to win the election", Scott said Thursday night.
Every vote that was legally and verifiably cast prior to the polls closing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday should of course be counted.
"The lack of transparency raises substantial concerns about the validity of the election process", said the lawsuit filed in Broward County. The governor, meanwhile, filed lawsuits in both counties seeking more information on how their ballots were being tallied. He is all but saying the election will only be legitimate if the tally is stopped right now and Republicans are declared the winners, no matter how many people's votes are not counted.
That could change however, as ballots continue to be counted in Broward, which is Florida's second largest and one of its most Democratic counties where 1.2 million people are registered to vote.
Kemp holds about a 63,000 vote lead, with 50.3 percent of nearly 4 million votes. The National Review reports that Brenda Snipes, the Broward County Board of Elections supervisor, has come under scrutiny for her handling of Tuesday's elections. That year's recounts in Broward and other counties were halted by the US Supreme Court, and George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by 537 votes in Florida, giving him the edge in the electoral college and handing him the White House.

"Now in Arizona, all of a sudden, out of the wilderness, they find a lot of votes, and she's - the other candidate - is just winning by a hair", Trump said.
Senator Marco Rubio, another Florida Republican, has also been an outspoken critic of the recount process, tweeting repeatedly about the controversy and earning Mr Trump's praise.
But Broward County is still counting early votes "60 hours after that deadline", and it's the only county in Florida to do so, Rubio tweeted.
Rick Scott called for an investigation into what he called vote counting fraud in Broward and Palm Beach counties, but no investigation has begun.
On Twitter, Trump also weighed in on the Georgia governor race, where Republican Brian Kemp has claimed victory, even though votes are still being counted and his Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams appears to be just shy of enough votes to trigger a recount.
Mr DeSantis's lead was about 38,500 votes on Thursday afternoon (local time), or 0.47 per cent of the vote.
