That investigation is now being lead by former FBI director Robert Mueller, who was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has overseen the probe's work.

In a statement Thursday, the Republican said Whitaker is a "steady hand that will provide good leadership and judgment, and will ensure that the United States Department of Justice upholds the highest standards of the rule of law".

"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump.

Trump asked for Sessions' resignation and then replaced him with Whitaker, who has criticized Mueller's probe and called for limits on it. Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker was asked to take the helm of the Justice Department until a new Attorney General is confirmed by the Senate.

Less than 24 hours after USA midterm elections wrapped up, Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at the request of President Donald Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday suggested he would not allow a floor vote on legislation to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Before the media briefing ended, CNN reporter Abby Phillip asked Trump if he wanted Whitaker to be involved in the Russian Federation probe, to which Trump responded, "That's up to him". He questioned Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein's ability to give Mueller such wide latitude and wanted to explore the bounds of what Mueller was examining, though Rosenstein kept Session's office "walled off" from the matter, this person said.

Sessions had been an avid supporter from the beginning of the Trump campaign, but ran afoul of the President when he recused himself from the probe on Russia's interference after it was revealed that Sessions had had two meetings with the former ambassador from Russia, Sergey Kislyak.

Organizers say the naming of Whitaker as Acting Attorney General is a "deliberate attempt to obstruct the special counsel's investigation".

During an impromptu press conference Friday before leaving for Paris, President Donald Trump put some distance between himself and Matt Whitaker, the newly appointed acting attorney general who now oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election meddling and any ties to Trump associates.

Whitaker has questioned Mueller's authority to investigate aspects of Trump's election campaign and suggested how to end the investigation: by cutting its budget.

On Friday morning Trump also insisted both that he "didn't know" Whitaker, a former USA attorney and Republican candidate in Iowa, and that he was "very highly thought of".

While Whitaker is now Mueller's ultimate supervisor, it was not immediately clear whether that meant Rosenstein would step aside.

Trump also dismissed the controversy over whether his designation of Whitaker to serve as acting attorney general was legal.

The mayor said the Senate's right tilt Tuesday night could pose a threat to the investigation.
